Kairav Engineer is an Executive Director at Astral Limited, an author, and one of India’s most respected wildlife photographers, recognised for bringing together creative depth, field experience, and conservation-led thinking. His long-term work in landscapes such as Ranthambore and Jawai offers an unparalleled visual narrative of the wild, shaped by years of observation, and an evolving understanding of animal behaviour. His photography reflects the quiet magnificence of wilderness through a lens refined over time.
Beyond storytelling, Kairav is also regarded as a leading voice among India’s new generation of conservationists, known for driving tangible wildlife protection through engineering-led solutions and enduring partnerships with forest departments. His conservation work spans some of the country’s most significant landscapes: Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura, Kanha, and Kaziranga, where his efforts have centred on habitat strengthening, water restoration, anti-poaching preparedness, and improved infrastructure for forest guards. Through Astral Foundation, he has supported the implementation of solar-powered waterholes, rapid-response patrol systems, drought-resilient field assets, and scientific studies focusing on gharials, Eurasian otters, and Indian leopards.

Introduced to photography at age three through a camera gifted by his father, Gaurav Ramnarayanan’s relationship with the natural world began early and evolved organically. Much of his childhood was spent near a tiger reserve in South India, where regular time in the forest fostered a quiet familiarity with wildlife and landscape. This early exposure laid the foundation for a lifelong engagement with nature, shaped equally by patience, curiosity, and observation.
With a keen eye and uncompromising standards, Gaurav has since travelled extensively across India and around the world, documenting wildlife, cultures, and environments with clarity and intent. Years spent photographing across varied terrains have honed not only his photographic skill, but also a deep understanding of animal behaviour, big cat tracking, and the nuances of working responsibly in wild spaces.
As Chief Operating Officer of Safari Crafters, he translates this depth of experience into carefully curated journeys that balance operational excellence with authenticity. His role has been instrumental in building the organisation’s foundation—ensuring that every safari is informed by knowledge, executed with precision, and designed to deliver meaningful engagement with the wilderness.
Gaurav is the recipient of five international photography awards from globally respected institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States, underscoring his standing as a photographer whose work combines aesthetic strength with ecological insight.
